Late for jummah
December 19, 2008I know I have been away for awhile, things have been up in the air and lots of changes has happened alhamdulillah. Im now living back in UK, Ive been down to London for a month and now Im back up north in Liverpool looking for jobs in London.. does anyone know of anything in the science sector??
Anyways, while I was down there.. chatting about marriage and what not with a suitor
We were late for the masjid at one point and I had a question about something. Im sure we are all aways coming across the hadith about the prophet (saws) saying that noone must sit down in the masjid before praying the 2 rakahs. So what happens if you get to the masjid late and the congregational prayer is already started?? Do you….
- pray 2 rakahs, then join the congregation
- just join the congregation then pray the 2 rakahs after you finished
- pray only with the congregation….. ‘the time for the sunnah has passed already’
So? what would you do? someone reminded me fard is more important than sunnah, but does that mean we totally forget this strong hadith because of our timekeeping? I cant find anything on the net as I dont really know what to search for.
Can anyone point me in the right direction? Insha’allah
Ok this is what I have found
“If anyone of you goes to attend the Friday Prayer while the Imam is delivering Khutbah he should pray 2 rakats and should not make them long.” (Muslim)
There is another hadith. Jabir (ra) says that once a man, came to Friday Prayer while the Messenger of Allah (saw) was delivering Khutbah, so Allah’s messenger (saw) asked him, “Did you pray?” “No”, he answered. Then Prophet (saw) said to him, “Stand up and pray .” (Bukhari, Muslim)

Here are the hadiths from Muslim
Book 004, Number 1901: Jabir b. ‘Abdullah said that the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) delivered the sermon and said: When any one of you comes for the Friday (prayer) and the Imam comes out (from his apartment), (even then) should observe two rak’ahs (of prayer).
Book 004, Number 1903: Jabir b. ‘Abdullah reported: Sulaik Ghatafani came on Friday when the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) was delivering the sermon. He (Sulaik) sat down. He (the Holy Prophet) said to him: 0 Sulaik I stand and observe two rak’ahs and make them short, and then said: When any one of you comes on Friday, while the Imam delivers the sermon, he should observe two rak’ahs and should make them short.

Inshallah that helps!
shukran sis.. although these ahadith only relate to if you arrive during the khutbah and not the actual salah.
Sorry didn’t notice that in the question… how about this from that first link
“ACTUAL JUMAH PRAYER
Jumah Prayer is 2 rakats fard. If a person is late and finds only 1 rakat with the congregation he should complete the second rakat alone. If a person arrives late that he misses the Jumah prayer completely then he has to offer 4 rakat fard of Zuhr prayer. The Jumah prayer is replacement of Zuhr prayer but the Imam has to recite Q’irat aloud in Jumah Prayer.”
Shukran for your investigation sis… however again this is in response to the actual salah and not the sunnah 2 rakat for entering the masjid… insha’allah I will research again.
Assalamualaikum to my fellow brethren..
i’m very interested in this matter. it always come to my mind if i come late for the jumaat prayer (we call it this way
, then what should i do.
my question is: if i come late for jumaat prayer and i never listen to the khutbah and i straightforwardly follow the imam to pray the two rakaat, should i add another two rakaat in my jumaat prayer?
i heard someone said (my friend, i think. i can’t recall who) that the two parts of khutbah is the replacement of two rakaat of zuhr. so when we never listen the two khutbah, should we add them or just perform the two rakaat or what?
i’m sorry if my english confuses you, English is my second language. i pray that someone will tell me the truth (supporting hadith etc) so i can have assurance about this..thanks…
